The Autumn Color Palette: Soft, True and Deep Autumn
The autumn color palette is the warm, earthy corner of seasonal color analysis: camel, rust, mustard, olive, warm teal and chocolate, rich rather than bright. This guide covers what all Autumns share, how Soft, True and Deep Autumn differ, and how to explore which one feels like yours.
What is the Autumn color palette?
In 12 season color analysis, colors (and people’s natural coloring) are sorted by three qualities: warm or cool undertone, light or deep value, and soft or clear chroma. The four seasonal families are the four combinations people talk about most, and Autumn is the one that is warm and earthy: golden-based, usually a little muted, and comfortable with depth.
Think of the autumn color palette as a forest in late-afternoon light: rust and amber leaves, mossy greens, ochre fields, dark tree bark. A typical Autumn red is brick rather than cherry; an Autumn white is cream rather than optic white; an Autumn dark is chocolate or espresso rather than black. You will also see it called the fall color palette, especially in the US. Same family, different word.
The name has nothing to do with the time of year, and it isn’t about pumpkins or leaf garlands either. An Autumn palette is a family of colors you can wear all year round; it simply borrows the mood of autumn colors in nature. If the warm versus cool part is new to you, start with warm vs cool undertones, explained, then come back.
The typical Autumn qualities
- Warm undertone. Colors lean golden, orange and olive rather than blue or pink. This is the quality that ties the three Autumns together.
- Medium to deep value. Autumn palettes skip icy pastels. Even the lightest Autumn colors (cream, oyster, wheat) have a little weight to them.
- Muted to rich chroma. Colors look earthy, as if a touch of brown or grey were mixed in. Soft Autumn is the most muted; Deep Autumn can be quite rich, but none of them are neon.
- Tonal contrast. Autumn outfits often look best when colors share the same warmth: camel with rust, olive with cream, chocolate with burnt orange.
People who enjoy an Autumn palette often say icy pastels make them look washed out, bright fuchsia or royal blue feels like it is wearing them, and earthy colors make the face look warm and even. That is a style impression, not a measurement, and any skin depth can lean Autumn.

The three Autumn color palettes
All three are warm and earthy. What changes is which quality is strongest: softness, warmth or depth.
Soft Autumn · also called Muted Autumn
The gentlest, most muted Autumn. Warm colors with a soft haze: camel, clay, moss, sage, soft salmon, dusty turquoise.
True Autumn · also called Warm Autumn
The warmest Autumn, medium in depth. Golden and spicy: rust, ochre, mustard, moss green, warm teal, bronze.
Deep Autumn · also called Dark Autumn
The darkest Autumn. Rich and glowing: chocolate, mahogany, burnt orange, pine, deep teal, warm aubergine.

Same idea, three Autumn versions
The easiest way to see how the Autumns differ is to take one color idea and compare each season’s version. Soft Autumn dusts it down, True Autumn turns up the gold, Deep Autumn takes it darker.

Read down a column and you get a feel for each season. Soft Autumn is blended and gentle, closer to a faded linen than a spice jar. True Autumn is the most clearly golden, the classic rust-mustard-olive look. Deep Autumn is dark and glowing, with chocolate, pine and oxblood doing the heavy lifting. Notice that petrol appears in both True and Deep Autumn: neighboring seasons share colors, which is why the borders between them feel blurry.
Colors Autumns usually skip
Not forbidden, just harder to wear near the face. These are the colors ColorWhim’s Autumn pages flag as “approach carefully”. Away from the face (shoes, bags, trousers), wear whatever you like.

The pattern is easy to remember: Autumns usually avoid colors that are icy and cool (icy blue, icy lavender, baby pink, light cool grey), cool and electric (fuchsia, royal blue, neon pink) or stark (black, optic white). If you love one of them, wear it lower on the body or put an Autumn neutral such as cream, camel or coffee between it and your face.
Which Autumn am I? How to explore it
No guide can tell you your season with certainty, and lighting, makeup and hair color all shift the result. What you can do is compare colors side by side and notice which ones make your face look smoother and more awake. Try this in daylight, near a window, without strong makeup:
- Check that Autumn is the right family. Hold a warm color (camel or rust) and a cool one (icy blue or fuchsia) under your chin. If the warm one looks healthier and the cool one makes you look grey or tired, the warm side, Spring or Autumn, is worth exploring.
- Autumn or Spring? Compare terracotta with a clear coral, or mustard with marigold. If the clear, sunny versions look loud and the earthy ones look rich, stay with Autumn. If the earthy ones look muddy, have a look at the Spring palettes such as True Spring.
- Soft Autumn? Compare Clay with Rust. If the gentler clay blends in beautifully and rust feels heavy, read the Soft Autumn color palette.
- True Autumn? Compare Mustard with Wheat. If the stronger, more golden mustard makes you look warm and alive rather than yellow, look at the True Autumn (Warm Autumn) color palette.
- Deep Autumn? Compare Chocolate with Camel. If the dark chocolate defines your features and camel looks a little faded, the Deep Autumn (Dark Autumn) color palette may suit you.
Prefer not to dig out fabrics? ColorWhim’s free photo tool lets you upload a selfie and switch between all 12 palettes as virtual drapes around your face. It runs in your browser and your photo isn’t uploaded. No photo handy? The color analysis quiz asks quick questions about your coloring and shows which seasons you lean toward. Treat both as a starting point for exploring, not a verdict, and trust what you see in the mirror.
Many people sit between two Autumns, or between an Autumn and its neighbor in another family (Soft Summer, True Spring or Deep Winter). That’s normal: seasons are neighborhoods, not boxes. If you suspect you’re on the cool-and-soft border, the summer color palette guide is the natural next read, and Soft Autumn vs Soft Summer compares the two muted seasons side by side.
Wearing the autumn color palette: outfits, makeup, hair and jewelry
Outfits
- Swap black for chocolate, coffee or espresso. A chocolate blazer, coffee trousers or an espresso coat looks just as polished and much warmer.
- Choose cream over optic white for shirts and tees worn close to the face. Oyster is the softer option for Soft Autumns.
- Build on camel and olive. These two neutrals pair with almost every other Autumn color, from rust to teal.
- Add one spice accent. A rust knit, a mustard scarf or a warm teal blouse is enough color for most outfits.
- Match the depth to your Autumn. Soft Autumn looks best when everything is a little blended, True Autumn handles golden mid-tones like ochre and moss, Deep Autumn can anchor outfits in pine, mahogany and espresso.
Makeup
Autumn makeup tends to look best warm and earthy: peach, terracotta and bronze on the cheeks, caramel, brick and warm red on the lips, and bronze, copper, khaki or olive on the eyes, with brown liner instead of black. Icy pinks and frosty silver shadows are usually the first things to swap out. Soft Autumns lean blended and low-contrast, True Autumns can carry rust and copper, Deep Autumns suit oxblood and chocolate-berry lips.
Hair
Warm hair colors echo the autumn color palette: golden and honey browns, chestnut, auburn and copper, and for deeper Autumns dark brown and mahogany. Ashy, blue-black and icy platinum tones are the ones that most often clash. If you color your hair, warm caramel or copper tones blended through the lengths usually look more natural than stark streaks. For shade ideas by depth and tips for talking to a colorist, see hair colors for warm skin tones.
Jewelry and accessories
Yellow gold, brass, copper and bronze are the classic Autumn metals; brushed and antiqued finishes suit Soft Autumn especially well, and Deep Autumn can carry bolder pieces. Tortoiseshell frames, cognac leather, woven textures and suede in camel, tan or coffee are easy accessory choices.
Autumn color palette FAQ
What colors are in the autumn color palette?
Warm, earthy colors: camel, rust, terracotta, ochre and mustard, olive and moss, forest and jade greens, warm teal and petrol, bronze, brick red and warm aubergine, with cream, coffee and chocolate as neutrals. Soft Autumn takes the most muted versions, True Autumn the most golden and Deep Autumn the darkest.
What are the three Autumn seasons?
Soft Autumn, also called Muted Autumn (warm and gently muted), True Autumn, also called Warm Autumn (the warmest and most typical), and Deep Autumn, also called Dark Autumn (the deepest and richest). They share a warm, earthy base and differ in how muted or how dark the colors are.
Is Warm Autumn the same as True Autumn?
Yes. Warm Autumn and True Autumn are two names for the same season, the one in the middle of the Autumn family whose strongest quality is warmth. In the same way, Dark Autumn is another name for Deep Autumn and Muted Autumn is another name for Soft Autumn.
Does the autumn color palette mean fall colors for decorating?
Not here. In seasonal color analysis, “Autumn” (or “Fall”) is the name of a family of colors that may flatter warm, earthy coloring, not a seasonal decor theme. You can wear an Autumn palette in spring as easily as in October; the name simply borrows the mood of autumn leaves and golden afternoon light.
Is black good for Autumns?
ColorWhim’s Soft and True Autumn palettes flag black as hard to wear near the face, because it can look cold and flat beside warm coloring. Some Deep Autumns can carry it. For most Autumns, espresso, chocolate, coffee or warm charcoal give the same polish with more warmth. Black shoes or bags away from the face are rarely a problem.
Is navy good for Autumns?
Navy is a cool color, so it is not at the heart of the Autumn palette. Deep Autumn’s guide includes a dark ink navy as a neutral, and many Autumns find a deep navy easier than black. If you want blue, the warm, greened blues are the more natural Autumn choice: petrol, teal blue and warm teal.
Is green a good color for Autumns?
Yes, green is one of the most Autumn colors there is. Olive, moss, sage, jade forest, pine and deep forest all appear in ColorWhim’s Autumn palettes. Choose the softer greens for Soft Autumn and the darker ones for Deep Autumn.
Am I a Spring or an Autumn?
Both families are warm. Spring is clearer, brighter and usually lighter (coral, marigold, aqua); Autumn is more muted, earthy and usually deeper (terracotta, mustard, olive). Compare a clear coral with terracotta, or marigold with mustard, near your face in daylight. If the earthy version looks richer and the clear one looks loud, Autumn is worth exploring.
